Children’s palliative care in Indonesia

Every child deserves comfort, dignity and hope.

When a child is living with cancer or HIV, treatment alone is not enough. Rachel House nurses visit children in their own homes across Jakarta — managing pain, teaching families how to care, and staying beside them for as long as they are needed. Always free of charge.

Free of charge
No family is ever sent a bill for a nurse’s visit.
At home
Care delivered where the child lives, not in a ward.
Alongside treatment
We work with the child’s hospital team, never instead of it.

Why we’re here

Thousands of children living with serious illness need more than treatment.

  • 01

Pain is treated last, if at all

Morphine and other essential pain medicines remain hard to access for children in much of Indonesia, and few clinicians are trained to prescribe them for paediatric patients.

  • 02

Families are sent home without support

When curative treatment ends, parents are left to manage symptoms, feeding, wounds and fear on their own — often in a single rented room.

  • 03

    Palliative care is still misunderstood

It is widely read as “giving up”. In practice it starts at diagnosis, runs alongside treatment, and helps children live better for however long they have.

Who we are

A small team of nurses who go where children are.

Rachel House is an Indonesian non-profit providing free palliative care to children living with life-limiting illness. Our nurses travel across Jakarta by motorbike and public transport to reach children in their homes — relieving pain, dressing wounds, coaching parents, and making sure no family faces a child’s illness alone. Alongside direct care, we train doctors, nurses and community health workers so that this care reaches far beyond the families we can visit ourselves.

A child’s story

The morning Arif asked to go back to school

“For eight months he had not asked for anything. Then one morning he asked for his uniform.”

Arif was nine when the pain in his legs became too much to hide. Our nurse began visiting twice a week — adjusting his medication until he could sleep through the night, teaching his mother how to keep the dosing steady, and slowly giving a boy back the ordinary hours of his day.

The story of Tyas

A cancer diagnosis, an amputated leg and a school that turned her away have not dimmed Tyas’ dream of becoming a teacher. Watch her family’s story, and nurse Dadan’s part in it.
